Birthdays Are A Battlefield
How do I even begin to wish a happy birthday to one of my ultimate favorite most sensationalist people in the world? Oh yeah, Hey there Patty Patty Happy Birthday! That's right just a mere 54 years ago a rock icon was born, Miss Pat Benatar, at the time Patricia Andrejewski (pronounced Andjeski) was born in New York. At 19, she'd marry high school boyfriend Dennis Benatar, head to Virginia where the soldier was stationed and begin playing with some cabaret acts. As her marriage fizzled, and her desire to sing hit a high she headed back to New York and around 3 o'clock one morning she was discovered singing at the Catch A Rising Star club and the club's owner became her manager, and after a year she had a record contract, fired an original producer who wanted to take her into Olivia type of direction and hooked up with the Chinnichap gang and created the masterpiece that is 1979's In The Heat Of The Night. And from the time I first heard the album until now, I have become a slight fan of Ms. Benatar. Okay, you all know how much I love this woman. There wasn't another one really like her at the time, my uncle had the Patti Smith album and she rocked but in a different way, Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders were on the video and the radio but she wasn't how do you say quite as sexy as the flame that was Benatar. Of course there was my other girl Debbie but Pat's style and music was different. Debs was New York cool, arty, Pat was to the wall rocking it out with attitude. There was room in my Debbie loving world for one more woman who could take the boys of the band and put them all into their place cuz she could. Yes, she's a heartbreaker full of fire and ice who once ran with the shadows of the night but I will forever be listening to the classic stuff she's been putting out for the past 25ish years, so everybody lay down cuz today it's Pat Benatar Day all over the world - or at least my world.
