BubbaTUNESday - All Kinds Of Special

This week is a very special week here at BubbaTUNESday - as the brand new P!nk CD comes out today - which I've been putting off listening to (since it's on the web right now) and instead will be heading my cha cha heels over to Virgin after work to pick it up! Which is where I have to veer off and bitch a minute, back when Tower Records still existed and was located just up the hill from my house, it would be Tuesdays like this that I would head over there BEFORE WORK and pick up the newest releases and thus I could spend all day listening to my new CDs, and now I have to haul my cookies all the way to Hollywood to get a new CD - I know my life can suck!

In other music news (that is what BubbaTUNESday is all about), I recieved the most exciting news ever - Lisa Hartman is finally coming out on CD. Well kind of. You see way back in 1988 her album Til My Heart Stops was actually released on CD by Atlantic Records. These days that CD goes for like $100 sometimes on Ebay and the like.. luckily I found a copy for only $26 and bought the sucker.. but now everyone can own it and not just in Bubbatunes version.. as Wounded Bird Records is re-releasing Til My Heart Stops next month! The End Of An Era

It is with sad remorse I announce that Swivek is left without a record label.. Flexible Records run by my pal Patrick is now defunct. Four years and 75 CDs later, Patrick is just too busy to keep it going. But it was cool while it lasted.. as for Swivek, don't fear none for I will still be making music and as for all of our past releases, they will soon be available right on our own website. And you can always go the way old fashioned way and actually buy three of our CDs at www.cdbaby.com if you really want to. "Mexican Gods", "Bruised" and "Darkness + Light" are all available there.

So stay tuned for a whole new www.swivek.com

Super-twisted pop made with equal parts blood, tears and sugar. These tracks are memorably sticky like velvet wallpaper applied crookedly on the walls of your brain. Into the Blue is another varied entry into the vast Swivek repetoire, from the power-bop of the original "Flirt" to the electronic space drones of "She is Peace" and the manic "Happy Happy Happy" which is like a rum and Coke spiked with a shot of pure dopamine.The LP is tempered with some mellower moments, like the ultra-catchy modern pop of "Not a Love Song" and the tender "Deep Inside", where Bradley really allows the inner flame of his smoky voice to burn through. BubbaTUNESday

It's that time of the week - the day to look at a few CDs I have been listening to. Luckily for you all, I survived a trip back to the Northwoods of Wisconsin and one of the first things I did was hit the Sunset Strip and head over to Rainbow Bar & Grill where we watched a real site to behold, the WeHo indie synthy pop goodness known as Shitting Glitter...

and thanks to the powers of the Glitter I got my little digits on a copy of their latest EP, the fun titled Sidesaddle which features such electro-y classics as "Slut Buffet" and "Mustache Ride 5c" - every single song on here is a little dose of fun and excitement, and I can't stop singing them out loud right along with Amy Crosby - the guitar crunchy riffs of Brandon Glen mesh with Devin Tait's synth programming, it's dancey, groovy and dirty - just the way I like it. Plus they're some of the coolest people I've met in LA - that's right, I know them, I've hung with them, that's how I roll here in La La Land...

And then there's a little CD release by a gal I like to call Deborah Harry - that's right I said it, my girl has released her first CD in 14 years and I can't get enough. Truth be told, I had a bootleg copy a few months ago so I knew all the songs before today's release but come on, I had to have the artwork. Not to mention it's Debbie Harry so if she releases something you buy it, no questions asked, she does have to pay for dog food for her little Chi Chi...

So today comes Necessary Evil, a hybrid of all things Debbie - the poppy confections found in the single "Two Times Blue", the sentimental ballads like "If I Had You", the hardcore punkette found in "School For Scandal" and "Whiteout" - this is Debbie and Blondie in full force. Mostly produced by Super Buddah, with a few drops in by Chris Stein and Bill Ware, this CD has yet to be more than 2" away from the CD player at all times. If you haven't got it yet, get your ass up and out to the store ...

TUNESday - New Swivek Single!!!

Well I promised a summer single and I delivered - I give you the new Swivek single"Flirt"... a daring and touching true story of a slut who tried to flirt with my man, oh yes, you see how I put my heart on the line for you, my fans...

Patrick English of Orange Television took our rocking jaunt through sassiness and added his own touches to create our first full collaboration of sorts, with lines like "I could wipe the floor with you but what good would it prove?" and Patrick's intense arrangements, I'm sure you're going to be wiping the floor with your jaw...

Also included are two brand new songs I wrote, a rollicking Gossip-y touched ditty called "I Told You" and to counter act the bitchy title track, a sensitive little guitar ballad (I know!) called "Deep Inside" and the whole EP knocks off with an insanely fun remix of "Intensity Is Recommended" from our darkness + light album - the Flo Castleberry (I know!) remix was done by the one and only Patrick.

There are two brand new releases this week from two of my favorite indie bands Orange Televison and Veduta. So check them out:

Orange Television: Wisdom of Crowds
Summer brings lovely skies, sun sickness, and always some new tunes by North Idaho's finest experimental electropop unit Orange Television. Lead track "Wisdom of Crowds" is an upbeat little ditty about the surreality of spending too much time and money going out and drinking yourself silly trying to meet important people or a potential love match, when you should just be home having tea and watching "Top Chef." B-Side "The Rumpled Blitz" features the gossipy telephone voice of Quincy Clark, and isn't really about anything particular. Also features an ode to Libby, Montana, "Mountain Town in the Near Future" and the thumping Fran's Regina mix of the title track.

Veduta: We Are One
We're all aglow with midsummer joy about the fact that Mr. Wimmer has bestowed upon us the fine honor of releasing three tracks from his recent Veduta out-takes and remixes collection, plus one remix exclusive, all in the convenient downloadable EP format. These tracks were recorded several years ago, but never appeared on an official Veduta release until recently. Lead track "We Are One" is a wildly percussive little number that will worm it's way into your ear and cause fits of booty groove and uncontrollable swooning.

We're sure Swivek fans will joyfully plotz in unison when they hear "Flirt", the new single and EP from West Hollywood's Swivek aka Bradley Buzzee. It's another classic brazen stomping Swivek sass-out with lines like "I could wipe the floor with you, but what good would it prove?" The track features co-production and keyboards by Orange Television's Patrick English, who also did the remix bonus cut "Intensity is Recommended (Flo Castleberry Mix)". This EP also includes additional B-Sides "Deep Inside" and "I Told You". Available here on July 17.

Swivek Pick Of The Week

This weekend is LA Gay Pride and I couldn't be more gay, I mean happy, or do I mean gay? Either way, it's going to be a heck of a hoot with a bunch of 80's ladies set to perform, and I will be there swigging beer if I have to be pushed down the hill on a gurney (I'm still a little sick), so for today's Swivek Pick Of The Week, I thought my 2005 single, a cover of the uber fab Lisa Hartman's "Where The Boys Are" was the perfect kick off to the gay pride season. So I give you Swivek's "Where The Boys Are (Single Mix)" - it's one of my more popular singles (yes I have popular singles you beatch), and incidentally it was my boss at the time, who came up with the idea to do the dancey trance version you hear, I had originally wanted to do a full kitsch ballad a la the original but he heard it differently and he was so right.

That Flexible Sound

The greatest internet indie label Flexible Records has just released some brand new CDs by some of my favorite indie bands - and it's my duty as not only these bands' label mate but as a fan to talk a little bit about these brand new releases of music flexibility...

This month there are three new releases, a single by ASP, which is a gal named Amy from Idaho who knows her way around moody electro music, another single by a band called Jaguar who seem to know their way around a Casio and a full lengthed album of essential sounds by Warmer called 1:1, so let's take a look shall we?


flex59 Asp - Talk (single 2007)
Talk is the teaser single from the new album being recorded by Amy Willis aka ASP. She's had a few releases on Flexible including a gothy groove of a vampire song on the last Halloween compilation. Her music is always enjoyable and tangible but I think "Talk" with its minimal funk electro groove is the best song she's done so far. Mixed in with the uber cool beats is her trancey vocal take where she meanders in and out with simple words of 'I want to talk to you.' In a truly cool little option, Amy has invited every musician and would be musician of the world to download tracks from her new album and you can remix them yourself. She'll pick the ones she likes best and they may end up on the new album. If things keep going like this, I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up being a bright star in the electro indie scene. The single also contains a remix of "Talk" by our group leader/Flexible guru Patrick English's band Orange Television. You can download the single FOR FREE here: ASP-Talk single.

flex60 Warmer - 1.1 (2007)
Last year, Warmer (Sandpoint, Idaho's Jesse Gunn) released 1. to become in some respects different on Flexible Records. The album is a mixture of moody industrial rock and new alternative brushes that included the excellent "9 To 5" (not to be confused with Dolly of course), and this year he unleashes 1.1, though fairly close in the formula of the first album I am able to completely wrap myself right around this dark cloud of moody songs. Sure, it has the industrial elements of Nine Inch Nails, and Jesse Gunn's vocals are as equally strong and foreboding as Mr. Reznor, but Warmer actually knows about hooks and with each song the hook of it sinks into your soul and not only can you relate to the words, you actually feel them through the music. Using the excellent tried and true formula of verse/chorus in most songs, he is able to come up with the feelings of angst, anger, disgust, disappointment and the occasional euphoria without coming off so experimental and moody it's lost on the listener. When Patti Smith took her moody eclecticism into pop territory with the Easter album, she ended up scoring new fans and radio airplay, and when you listen to 1.1 you can't help but think back to spit fire Patti Smith, her convictions are as strong as her music and so are Jesse's. The melody and vocals represented in the outstanding "Ethanol" conjure up a Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe and the smooth verse/ outrageous chorus formula on "In The Key Of Drone" works beautifully with the lyrics, some of the best on the album. Another of my favs, "The Smells And The Taste" is essentially a sex song and pulls me right into its grips. The music, the vocals, the words all make 1.1 a great album, and add to the fact that Jesse Gunn actually looks like a rock star, well, I'd say Flexible may have a hit on its hands. The whole album is excellent and it's been quite a while since I found an album I enjoy from start to finish, and lucky for all of us, it's free! Just go to Flexible Records and download it and join Warmer's myspace page. I'm telling you this is good stuff. Maybe if I'm lucky someday I'll collaborate with Jesse, that could make some interesting dents in the Flexible roster.



flex61 Jaguar - Momus single (2007)
Relying very heavily on the now often overlooked Casio sound, Jaguar comes up with two little bits of musical endeavors that throw me right back to the days of truly being experimental and exciting. I've always wanted to head to a more pop/rock place in my own music but the whole Swivek sound began in a basement with Patrick English and I working on little loops of electro bliss and we pulled out that Casio more than once - including doing a cover of Blondie's "Fade Away & Radiate" (which would've been great if I knew how to sing after having 17 beers). So with each listen to "Momus" and its b-side "Would You Describe This Feeling As Warm" I am reminded of those old days in the Couer d'Alene basement and it just gives me the warm fuzzies. and though it came out a few months ago, honorable mention has to go to the latest single by the one true punk indie band on the Flexible label, The Murders, who continually amaze me, with hook after hook, song after song and if I were lucky enough show after show in the blisterous Idaho world. You can download their latest single "Porcelain Doll" in all it's Pixie-ish glory at Flexible Records as well. The single also includes a live version of a sex song "White Knuckles." I tell you 2007 never felt so much like 1977 shady CBGB's as it does with these two songs. For even more Murders their excellent Galore EP is also available on Flexible.
